Romain Grosjean will take part in tests with Haas F1.
Former Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean, who left the World Championship after the horrific crash in Bahrain in 2020, will return to the Haas F1 cockpit for tests.
The team confirmed that tomorrow, September 26, he will take the wheel as part of the regulation-permitted tests of older cars to be held at Mugello. The Frenchman will be driving the 2023 car – the VF-23.
Romain Grosjean: "I am incredibly grateful to Gene Haas and Aio Komatsu for the invitation to test at Mugello. I cannot express how excited I am at the opportunity to get back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car.
It's hard to believe nearly five years have passed since the crash; I am happy to return to the cockpit and test with my old team — it really is something special.
I'll be able to see everyone, we have a lot to remember, but I want to be useful to the team — it's great that Haas F1 now has tests of older cars included in the development program.
In 2020 my children drew a helmet design for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the race that was supposed to be my last that season, and I will finally be able to try it out behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car this Friday."
At the tests Grosjean will reunite with team members who worked in his garage in 2020. Team principal Aio Komatsu will be his race engineer; Dominic Haines — Romain's race engineer in 2019 and 2020 — will also attend.
Aio Komatsu: "I am very pleased to welcome Romain Grosjean, who for the first time in five years will once again sit behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car, but I am especially proud that it will be one of our cars. I worked with Romain throughout his Formula 1 career, so these tests at Mugello hold special meaning for both of us.
I am glad he took the opportunity to return behind the wheel with us. This day will be special — many members of the original team will come together to witness the event.
It should be a fun day, and, knowing Romain, I'm sure — as usual — he will give it his all; I expect nothing less, especially since we've been talking about making this happen for a long time."
