Russell: We don't understand where such speed came from!

George Russell won the Singapore Grand Prix, after which he said he had avenged the crash he was involved in on the final lap of that race two years ago. At the same time he admitted that he himself does not understand what made the Mercedes so fast.

George Russell (1st): "An incredibly pleasant feeling, especially after what happened two years ago when I missed the chance to succeed. But today I more than made up for that and I'm very grateful to the team. This weekend they worked absolutely brilliantly!

Actually, we don't understand where that speed came from, but I'm very, very happy! On Friday I had big difficulties for many reasons, I wasn't comfortable behind the wheel, but by the end of qualifying I felt the car was working perfectly, and it happened at exactly the most important moment.

Before the start I was a bit nervous when I saw Max had soft tyres on his car, but we drove the first stint perfectly and built a gap.

Yesterday I said that if I had to rank this year's races by the likelihood of taking victory, the Singapore Grand Prix would be at the very bottom of that list. I think the team and I will need to analyse everything thoroughly tomorrow and the day after to understand what made us so quick, and to try to maintain this pace until the end of the season."

Kimi Antonelli (5th): "At the start, right after I got away, I had some issues with wheelspin on the driven wheels, and that cost me two positions even before the first corner. After that I had to fight back, especially as the race was very physically demanding.

But I'm glad I was able to make my way forward. The pace was good, and I was able to regain one position thanks to a successful overtaking move on Charles Leclerc. We could have achieved more today, but fifth place is a decent result.

Congratulations to George on a wonderful win — he drove brilliantly today. It's a great result for our team, which will help us fight for second place in the Constructors' Championship."
