"Transitioning to Super Formula is a significant step"
Max Verstappen has expressed his full support for Kalle Rovanpera’s surprising choice to leave rally driving in favor of a path toward Formula 1, even if it represents one of the most dramatic career shifts in motorsport in recent years. "It's a bold move, but I admire it," Verstappen shared with Viaplay in Austin. "Naturally, I'd enjoy seeing him continue in rallying as well, since it's a thrilling sport to watch. Moving to Super Formula is a substantial transition."
The reigning four-time world champion mentioned his interest in observing how the Finnish talent adjusts to single-seater racing. "He faces a significant challenge, yet he possesses great skill. I'm eager to see how everything unfolds," Verstappen remarked.
Rovanpera, 25, is set to compete in Japan’s Super Formula championship in 2026 with plans to aim for Formula 2 in 2027, all under the backing of Toyota. Toyota is entering into a new technical and financial partnership with the Haas team, which has led to speculation about the possibility of an F1 seat for the two-time WRC champion in the future.
Finnish racing veteran and team principal Marko Koiranen told Iltalehti that the rationale is clear. "It's straightforward to connect the dots," he stated. "Toyota supports Kalle and collaborates with the Haas F1 team. If everything goes according to Kalle and Toyota's plans, I have no doubt that Kalle will secure a position in F1."
Rovanpera's immediate challenge, however, will be to earn enough FIA Super Licence points to be eligible for Formula 1. For this reason, he is reportedly considering a participation in the Formula Regional Oceania Championship early next year to begin establishing his credentials in single-seater racing.
A spokesperson for the series confirmed the interest but refrained from providing specifics. "At this stage, I can only say we would be delighted to welcome him to our series and would be glad to provide him the chance to take his first steps in formula racing," the spokesperson informed Iltalehti. "However, I cannot elaborate on whether this will materialize."
