"We’ve aimed to innovate in every area."

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has defended the contemporary presentation of the sport, asserting that innovation and effective communication are crucial, despite concerns from some purists that F1 may be turning into a mere "show." The discussion was reignited when Carlos Sainz criticized the broadcast of the Singapore GP for emphasizing celebrities and drivers’ partners rather than significant on-track action. F1’s media department responded by stating that "the focus is always on providing fans with the best possible images of the race," and emphasized that there were "no compromises regarding what happens on the track."

In contrast, Auto Motor und Sport observed that the broadcast of the US Grand Prix in Austin last weekend intentionally steered clear of celebrity shots. The German outlet humorously noted that "even the drivers’ girlfriends had dressed up for nothing," while applauding the extensive use of picture-in-picture technology, aerial line-comparison footage, and innovative drone angles over the finish line.

During the Brand Connection event organized by Deloitte in Milan, Domenicali shared with La Gazzetta dello Sport that innovation has been pivotal to F1’s recent progress. "We’ve sought to innovate in every facet of our involvement," he stated. "From a sporting perspective, this was reflected in the introduction of the Sprint. The format was altered to direct more attention and take a distinct approach to the track."

He remarked that this same philosophy informs F1’s communication strategy. "The previous conversation pertains to methods of communication, different products, and being increasingly connected to younger audiences," noted the Italian. "From this viewpoint, we’ve excelled at interpreting the trends that have enabled this sports platform to grow even larger than before."

When asked about the balance between F1’s heritage and its new demographic, Domenicali responded: "We’ve observed a growth in our fan base. This is evidently the core group that has consistently followed us. It’s about presenting the right information in an alternative manner.

"It means we consistently attract those who are passionate about technological data. Ultimately, it’s a challenge that unfolds on the track, and that’s our most critical element."

Looking to the future, he emphasized the need for F1 to continue evolving while remaining relevant. "The challenge is to maintain relevance across all dimensions," Domenicali stated. "This will enable us to take a leading role in the coming years—particularly in technology, with sustainable fuel and new regulations.

"Another facet will revolve around entertainment," he added. "It must be increasingly comprehensive to provide unique experiences for all fans following us both at the track and through today’s diverse communication channels."
