Ford's involvement in F1 is 'more than just marketing' as the launch is scheduled.
"For two years, we explored every possibility."
Red Bull and Ford will formally announce their partnership for the 2026 Formula 1 season on January 15 at Ford's global headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. This event signifies the beginning of a new hybrid era for the leading team and its affiliated Racing Bulls operation.
The launch will introduce the Red Bull Ford Powertrains brand, which will provide power units for both teams starting in 2026, in accordance with F1’s next-generation engine regulations that incorporate 50 percent electric power and completely sustainable fuels.
Mark Rushbrook, the head of Ford Performance, stated that this partnership represents a significant, long-term commitment. "We have signed an eight-year agreement with Red Bull, lasting until the end of 2030," he confirmed. "Currently, we are collaboratively developing the power unit that will be utilized from at least 2026 through 2030."
"We examined all possibilities for two years, and forming a partnership with Red Bull is more sensible than fielding our own competing team. We will engage in a comprehensive technical exchange with Red Bull Powertrains. The technology for 2026, with its enhanced electric aspect and sustainable fuel, truly captured our interest."
"Participating in racing must hold technical significance for us—not merely a marketing strategy. With these new regulations, that is finally attainable."
Rushbrook also assured fans that Ford’s return to Formula 1 will not detract from its other racing commitments. "If the world remains as it is, we will continue our involvement in these series," he stated to Motorsport Aktuell, referring to Ford's ongoing presence in NASCAR and GT3 racing.
The January event will also reveal the 2026 liveries for both teams owned by Red Bull, a timing choice linked to the initial Barcelona pre-season test scheduled for January 26-30. According to Auto Motor und Sport, F1 regulations mandate that teams present their official liveries during testing, necessitating Red Bull to launch prior to the Barcelona event to avoid using unpainted or camouflage cars.
"For instance, Cadillac is doing just that," the German media outlet remarked. "Their main competitor from the same country will also be entering Formula 1 in 2026."
