Piastri acknowledged that team tactics affected him.
Oscar Piastri admitted that the team tactic McLaren used in Monza, when he was asked to let Lando Norris through, affected his performance at the next round in Baku. On the street circuit Oscar wrecked the car, which seriously undermined his title chances.
Answering on the Beyond the Grid podcast to the question of whether he understands the reasons why the Azerbaijan Grand Prix went badly for him, Oscar said: “In the end, the result was caused by a combination of several factors. I don't consider the previous race in Monza particularly successful, based on my own performance, and, of course, because of what happened after the pit stops.
But the Baku weekend itself was difficult. Nothing was going right, and I overdid it. I wasn't very happy with my driving and, ultimately, probably tried to make up for it a bit on Saturday.
In the lead-up to the race there were some things that, let's say, didn't really help. I had an engine problem in the first practice that knocked me off balance a bit. Then I didn't drive very well – that weekend we had C6 tyres at our disposal, the wear of which is known to be hard to control. There were lots of little things that piled up.
On Saturday I felt my pace was good, but I just pushed a bit too hard. It was the worst race weekend of my career, but perhaps in some sense the most useful.”
