On this day in 2009, the creation of Mercedes F1 was announced.
The Mercedes-AMG F1 works team has been competing in the championship since 2010 and is now completing its 16th season. Of course, in the 1950s there was a Daimler‑Benz team in Formula 1, and Juan Manuel Fangio won races and titles in its cars, but those were different times, and here we are talking about the most recent period of history.
Mercedes recalled that on this day 16 years ago, i.e. on 16 November 2009, the creation of the Stuttgart‑based company's factory team was officially announced.
The brief comment its press office attached to the poster dedicated to the event was: "The rest is history…"
It is worth adding a little: the team was created on the basis of Brawn GP, one of the most astonishing projects in Formula 1 history — so unusual that an entire documentary series is devoted to it, very engaging and produced to a high standard. If you haven't watched it, we strongly recommend filling that gap.
For now, a few statistics: since 2010 Mercedes drivers have taken 122 victories and stood on the podium a total of 291 times — including a week ago in São Paulo, where Kimi Antonelli finished second. They have taken pole position 135 times, and the team has recorded exactly 60 one‑two finishes.
They have won the Constructors' Championship eight times; Lewis Hamilton (now a Ferrari driver) claimed six titles behind the wheel of cars built in Brackley, and Nico Rosberg was world champion once.
The team's story continues: with three rounds remaining in the season it sits second in the Constructors' Championship, and there is little reason to doubt that more successes await it in the future — perhaps very soon.
