Retired Marko states that Verstappen no longer requires guidance.
"I don’t perceive any limit to his capabilities."
Recently retired Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko states that four-time world champion Max Verstappen has evolved into such a leader that he no longer requires guidance. In an interview with Germany’s Sport1, the 82-year-old mentioned that Verstappen essentially manages the team on his own. "Max has grown into such a leader that he doesn’t need advice anymore - he’s practically directing a team," Marko remarked. "The team has progressed well since Horner’s exit. I believe everything is in capable hands, and I’m already relishing the idea that I don’t have to travel to Australia. I’m organizing my TV viewing to ensure I have all the information I usually do - because it's tough to interpret things without sector times and similar data."
Marko also highlighted the Dutchman's life outside of racing. "Max is now a father, has pets, leads a balanced life - and is undoubtedly one of the greats in motorsport, possibly even the greatest," he noted. "However, he has matured to a level where he no longer requires guidance. It would be arrogant of me to add anything to that. Thus, it’s a favorable situation."
Marko firmly believes that Verstappen’s career is far from over, despite speculation suggesting that the new regulations might push the Dutchman away from Formula 1. "For Max, it’s not finished yet," he stated. "I don’t perceive any limit to his talents, his remarkable driving skills, and his technical intuition. If the right car is available, he will secure several more world championship titles."
Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen, mentioned that his son had already warned years ago about the future of Formula 1’s new regulations. "Max was discussing this two or three years in advance," he told Viaplay. "He had analyzed some data, but everyone laughed at him then. They claimed Max was being negative and so on. Now that the regulations are established, it’s clear for all to see. They should pay more attention to what the drivers say. But they don’t."
