Berger names Mercedes and McLaren as the frontrunners for 2026.
"They will set the standards in race configuration."
Gerhard Berger thinks that Mercedes and McLaren might lead the way in the new era of Formula 1 as the extensive 2026 regulations shift the competitive landscape. "With the new rules, it's crucial to understand the finer details," the F1 icon shared with APA news agency. Berger suggests that Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion, may be the most prepared for this challenge. "In 2026, the charging capabilities of the significantly more powerful battery will play a key role," he noted. "It's not only about who brakes the latest but also about knowing how to maintain enough battery power." "Verstappen excels in both aspects, sometimes even creating his own simulators, which contributes to his success. He's an extreme competitor on the track and an incredibly dedicated person who strives to comprehend motorsport in great detail."
However, Berger does not consider Red Bull as the top contender at the start. "McLaren and Mercedes will set the standards in race trim," he remarked. "I believe they’ve kept their strategies more concealed and will likely present some surprises in Australia." He mentioned that Ferrari seems to be trailing slightly but added, "They’re not looking bad."
Reflecting on the current Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, Berger commented, "Hamilton was outpaced by the speed of his teammate Leclerc last year. He’s undoubtedly an outstanding driver in my view, but it’s evident he’s aging."
At Mercedes, Berger anticipates a rivalry between George Russell and his young teammate Kimi Antonelli. "Russell, the bookmakers' favorite, first needs to outpace Antonelli," he said. "I see Antonelli as a rising star who will certainly challenge Russell."
However, he expressed uncertainty about the new regulations. "The concept of not taking a corner at full speed but instead using it to recharge the battery is difficult for me to grasp," Berger remarked. "I simply can’t comprehend it."
He also believes that the timing of these changes may not be ideal. "The shift comes at a poor time for the series, considering the previous two years featured an unprecedented number of three and four different winning teams."
Berger also honored the recently retired Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko, stating, "He established one of the greatest Formula 1 teams in history, which is a remarkable accomplishment for an Austrian." "I think Red Bull will miss him, but everything in its own time. I’m pleased for him that he has made this decision."
