Wolff cautions against getting carried away following Antonelli's breakthrough.
Toto Wolff has cautioned Formula 1 not to become overly excited about his protégé Kimi Antonelli after the young Mercedes driver achieved a notable victory from pole position in China.
The 19-year-old Italian's win in Shanghai—only his second season in Formula 1—has already sparked considerable enthusiasm in his home country. "After many tears, Italy can dream again," noted Corriere dello Sport, while La Gazzetta dello Sport stated that the victory is also a testament to Wolff, "the man who believed in him and chose him as the successor to none other than Lewis Hamilton."
Il Messaggero remarked that Antonelli "wins at 19 like a Formula 1 veteran," commending Wolff for supporting the young driver despite the associated risks.
Wolff, however, acknowledges that the increasing hype—especially in Ferrari-obsessed Italy—is something he wishes to temper. "You can already sense the excitement building, particularly in Italy," the Mercedes team principal noted. "I can already envision the headlines: world champion, 'Grande Kimi', and who knows what else. That’s really not beneficial. Mistakes will occur. He’s still a kid. So it’s far too soon to even consider a championship."
Wolff indicated that Antonelli’s swift advancement serves as evidence that Mercedes‘ decision to elevate him to Formula 1 at just 18 was the right choice. "Last year, many claimed it was too early," he admitted. "Of course, we questioned whether we had perhaps placed him in this pressure cooker too soon. But that was exactly the plan—to learn how to handle the highs and lows for a year. And now, in the second Grand Prix, he brought the race home diligently."
Wolff also stressed that Antonelli will not receive any special treatment within a Mercedes team that currently seems to possess the fastest car under the new regulations. "Both drivers have the same opportunities," he stated, referring to championship leader George Russell as well. "But it’s far too early to discuss the world championship. As a young person, he simply needs more maturity to develop."
Meanwhile, former Renault driver Vitaly Petrov believes Russell may still have the advantage in what appears to be a budding intra-Mercedes title battle. "I think Mercedes will allow their drivers to compete until the end as long as it doesn’t affect the constructors’ championship," he told Championat. "Russell seems stronger and more experienced, with more seasons to his credit. Antonelli performed well in qualifying and secured an important race—the first of his career. But we will have to wait and see how the championship unfolds and how Antonelli can compete against Russell."
