Verstappen was releasing the throttle unnecessarily.
Max Verstappen is actively criticizing the new regulations, but the German publication Auto Motor und Sport reports that in China, the reason for the delay was a misunderstanding with the race engineer. To effectively use the new power units, engineers instruct drivers to coast in certain sections. In Shanghai, Verstappen did this before turns 1, 6, and 14 until the engineer said that he was losing time in turn 6 compared to Berman. On lap 35 of 56, Max asked Gianpiero Lambiase: "Do I even need to lift off the throttle in turn 6?" The response was: "No need to lift off!" To which Verstappen irritably replied: "I've been lifting off for half the race. Why didn't anyone tell me?" When Verstappen reprimanded the engineer, Lambiase reacted sharply: "I'm on your side, Max. I'm trying to help you and provide information. Nothing more!"
