Marko: Red Bull knows how to come back from a deficit.
In an interview with OE24, former Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko spoke about the new rules, Adrian Newey's problems, and Max Verstappen's chances...
Question: Helmut, have you gotten used to the new Formula 1?
Helmut Marko: No. Right now, the most exciting event in the race is Ferrari's start. Nothing else special is happening. Most overtakes are just overtakes. But the season has just started, everything can change.
Question: Can Max Verstappen achieve more after his sixth place in Australia and retirement in China?
Helmut Marko: Red Bull knows how to quickly make up for lost ground. So anything is possible. The cancellation of the two April races will give them more time.
Question: What do you think about Verstappen's performance in the endurance race at the Nürburgring?
Helmut Marko: I am impressed by how he made his way through the pack. After the finish, his team was disqualified, but it was a practice for the 24-hour race, and it went well.
Question: Is there a risk that Formula 1 might take a back seat for him?
Helmut Marko: It is obvious that he enjoys endurance racing. In the future, he wants to race 24 hours of Le Mans and Spa, meaning all the classic races.
Question: Is it true that a few years ago Max wanted to drive a Formula 1 car on the North Loop of the Nürburgring, but you forbade him?
Helmut Marko: Yes, that was two years ago. The risk was too great. Max would definitely want to break the record.
Question: Do you really get calls with offers to return to Formula 1?
Helmut Marko: I have firmly stated my position and will not return to Formula 1.
Question: Has your former associate Adrian Newey been in touch with you?
Helmut Marko: We communicate. He is not doing very well. His project has problems that cannot be solved quickly.
Question: But your compatriot Toto Wolff's team has no problems...
Helmut Marko: Mercedes is a top-class team. Right now, they are not even showing their full strength. Antonelli is a good driver. He has always been fast, and with experience, he makes fewer mistakes.
Question: Do you think he will be able to fight for the title this season?
Helmut Marko: Everything suggests that the title will be won by Russell – he has the necessary experience.
