Wolff responds after Marko expresses worries about 2026.

"In sports, continual evolution is essential."

Toto Wolff has defended the controversial 2026 regulations in Formula 1 amidst renewed criticism from Dr. Helmut Marko, as debates surrounding this new era intensify. When addressing the growing criticism, the Mercedes team principal stated that the situation isn't as bleak as some portray.

"Not everyone is complaining; some drivers are encountering issues with the intricate electronic management," Wolff explained to Osterreich. "However, the primary audience we’re focused on is the fans, and over 90 percent of them believe that the races are now both entertaining and exciting."

Wolff also dismissed the notion that Formula 1 should revert to its previous setup. "In sports, you always have to evolve," he asserted. "It's important to acknowledge both sides - the traditionalists who prefer the sport as it was and the new fans who enjoy it as it currently is and advocate for maintaining that direction. We must determine what benefits F1 and its fans the most. Currently, there is a clear path forward."

With Mercedes in the lead, Wolff downplayed worries that the championship might become predictable. "The first two races present a completely different narrative," he noted. "I'm not concerned about it becoming dull. We have competitive speed, but so does Ferrari. McLaren will improve, and the rest will quickly adapt to engine management strategies. We are witnessing incredibly thrilling and dramatic racing, not just at the front with us and Ferrari but also within the midfield with numerous overtakes."

However, he did acknowledge there's room for improvement in one area. "We might be able to enhance the qualifying format by reducing the energy management aspect somewhat. That’s something we're currently addressing."

Wolff also downplayed Marko's criticisms. "The doctor is a traditionalist, and we must respect his viewpoint," he remarked.

Despite this, Marko has not softened his position. "No," the former Red Bull advisor replied when asked if he has come to accept the new Formula 1. "It depends on the Ferrari spectacle at the beginning. Without that, there isn’t much action. Most overtakes are simple passes. But it’s still early in the season; perhaps things will change."

Even so, Marko acknowledged Mercedes' current dominance. "Mercedes is in a league of its own, and they aren’t even revealing all of their capabilities," he stated.

Marko recognized Antonelli’s success in Shanghai but suggested that George Russell remains the more probable title contender for the time being. "Everything indicates Russell has the experience," he remarked.

Regarding Red Bull, Marko insisted that all is not lost despite a challenging start. "Red Bull is well-known for its ability to catch up swiftly and effectively. Therefore, anything is still possible," he asserted. "The positive aspect is that the two races in April have been canceled, providing them even more time."
