"I don’t believe that was the initial plan."

Ralf Schumacher has indicated that Aston Martin’s Mike Krack might become a candidate for a senior position at Audi following the abrupt departure of Jonathan Wheatley. Wheatley’s exit, amid reports of a year-long gardening leave, has prompted Audi to restructure its leadership under Mattia Binotto, raising questions about who could fill an important supporting role. Schumacher thinks this situation arises from underlying structural tensions.

"I don’t believe that was the original plan," he told Sky Deutschland, commenting on Audi’s dual leadership model involving Binotto. "He (Wheatley) was promised different things. If practical challenges are proving tougher, then I think Binotto has alternative views on how to organize the team." Schumacher stated that Wheatley’s departure is a setback, saying, "It’s unfortunate because I think continuity is vital for the team."

As Audi looks to potentially find a replacement alongside Binotto, Schumacher pointed to a particular candidate - and a well-known name. "Audi needs to adopt a more international perspective and possibly look for someone currently at other teams," he remarked. "Mike Krack is clearly doing a commendable job technically at Aston Martin and, crucially, possesses the essential skill of unifying the group." He also noted Krack’s language abilities, experience, and connections to Germany as potential benefits.

It remains uncertain whether such a transition is feasible, with no sign that Krack is intending to leave Aston Martin, despite the challenging start to the Honda partnership. "It’s still a fantastic project, even if things are a bit tougher than expected with Honda right now," Schumacher added.

Audi's urgency is amplified by a difficult beginning to its inaugural full season as a works team. Reliability issues have been significant, with the team completing just 112 out of 228 possible race laps thus far, indicating one of the lowest totals on the grid. Hydraulic problems have emerged as a major vulnerability, as the increasingly complex systems in the new cars are challenging to handle. Meanwhile, drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto have reported issues with drivability, with race starts and overall execution showing inconsistency. "It’s still a work in progress, and there’s plenty of room for enhancement," Hulkenberg acknowledged.

Despite these challenges, there are indications of underlying potential. Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu suggested that Audi’s engine performance may already be stronger than what the results reflect. "If you consider their performance on straightaways, the Audi is very, very competitive," he stated.
