George Russell: An advantage guarantees nothing

George Russell leads the individual standings after two rounds of the season. Ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, the Mercedes driver spoke about his teammate who won in China and the competitors who should not be underestimated.

George Russell: "Kimi did an excellent job in China, so he deserves credit for that. However, Ferrari once again had a great start and made my life very difficult on the first lap. But I'm glad the spectators saw a great show.

Kimi will always remember that day. The first victory brings special emotions, and it's just a matter of time before victories become more frequent. He is an incredible driver with great talent, so I have no doubt that there will be a tight battle between us throughout the year.

Of course, I am a bit disappointed that I didn't make it to the top step of the podium in China. But considering all the issues I faced over the weekend, I view the result as having earned eighteen points rather than lost seven. I'm pleased with the strong result for the team – we started the year well.

The team worked hard to get us in this shape, and the best team should win. But being back on top doesn't mean others aren't trying to slow us down.

I read last week that the Red Bull car is overweight, and McLaren didn't bring any updates and worked with the car in the same configuration as in Bahrain during the first rounds. We shouldn't forget about that. Yes, we have an advantage now, but it guarantees nothing."
