Four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen recently hinted at his potential future in F1, expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of racing. At the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend, he informed the media that he was “not enjoying the whole formula.”

When questioned by BBC Sport about whether this suggested he might “walk away at the end of the season,” Verstappen replied, “That’s what I’m saying. I’m considering everything within this paddock.”

This revelation is surprising, especially since Verstappen is still in his prime and is often regarded as one of the top, if not the best, current F1 drivers. In a previous interview for 2024, he mentioned he had “no interest in winning eight or nine world championships” and would prefer to pursue endurance racing in the future, but he has not specified a timeline for leaving F1.

The fact that BBC Sport referred to the “end of the [’26] season” in their question to Verstappen, and that he did not deny it, is significant.

Managed by the strategic duo of Raymond Vermulen and his father Jos, Verstappen may be leaking this information to the media to apply pressure on F1, the FIA, and the teams to revise the 2026 regulations. At the very least, he seems to be advocating for a consensus to eliminate the so-called “Mario Kart mushroom effect,” referring to the battery harvesting practices.

The absence of Verstappen would significantly diminish F1's market appeal and influence, a fact he is well aware of. He also understands that he could draw millions of fans to another series, along with their spending power in ticket and merchandise sales, and viewership.

Verstappen enjoys having fun, living life to the fullest, cherishing his family, and enjoying the wealth he has accumulated. His intentions should not be underestimated, nor should any implications of his potential departure.
