Four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen has hinted at what his near future may hold, considering the current landscape of F1 racing. At this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix, he mentioned to the media that he was "not enjoying the whole formula."
When BBC Sport inquired whether that implied he might "walk away at the end of the season," Verstappen replied, “That’s what I’m saying. I’m thinking about everything inside this paddock.”
This revelation comes as a surprise, given that Verstappen is still in his prime and undoubtedly one of the greatest, if not the best, active F1 drivers. Although he previously stated in a 2024 interview that he has "no interest in winning eight or nine world championships" and would prefer to pursue endurance racing in the future, he has never specified a timeline for when he might leave F1.

The fact that BBC Sport mentioned "end of the [’26] season" in their question to Verstappen, and he did not contradict it, is significant.
Managed by the influential duo Raymond Vermulen and his father Jos, Verstappen may be leaking these comments to the media to exert pressure on F1, the FIA, and the teams to revise the 2026 rules. Or at a minimum, to reach a consensus to eliminate what Verstappen and others refer to as the "Mario Kart mushroom effect," relating to battery harvesting processes.
The absence of Verstappen would significantly impact F1's marketability and influence, and he is well aware of this. He also recognizes that he could take his millions of fans to another racing series, along with their financial support (in terms of ticket and merchandise sales, as well as TV ratings).
Verstappen is someone who enjoys life, cherishes his family, and appreciates the wealth he has accumulated. It's important not to underestimate him or any perceived "threat" he may pose.
