Four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen recently hinted at his future in F1, especially in light of the current situation in racing. During the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend, he revealed to the media that he is “not enjoying the whole formula.”

When BBC Sport inquired if that meant he was considering leaving at the season's end, Verstappen replied, “That’s what I’m saying. I’m thinking about everything inside this paddock."

This statement is particularly surprising, as Verstappen is still at the height of his career and is often considered one of the top active F1 drivers. Although he previously mentioned in a 2024 interview that he had “no interest in winning eight or nine world championships” and would prefer to pursue endurance racing in the future, he has never specified a timeline for his departure from F1.

The fact that BBC Sport pointed out the “end of the [’26] season” in its query to Verstappen, and that he did not deny it, is significant.

Managed by influential figures Raymond Vermulen and his father Jos, Verstappen may be dropping these hints to the media as a tactic to urge F1, the FIA, and the teams to revise the 2026 regulations. Or, at the very least, to reach some consensus on eliminating the “Mario Kart mushroom effect,” a term used by Verstappen and others to describe the battery harvesting procedures.

Losing Verstappen would greatly impact F1's marketability and status, and he is aware of this. He also knows he could take his millions of fans to a different series, along with their financial support through ticket and merchandise sales, as well as TV ratings.

Verstappen is the type of person who enjoys having fun, living life to the fullest, spending time with his family, and enjoying his wealth. No one should underestimate him or any perceived “threat” he poses.
