Brundle to Verstappen: There are no irreplaceables in Formula 1.
Former Formula 1 driver and commentator for British Sky Sports Martin Brundle commented on the words of Max Verstappen, said after the finish of the Japanese Grand Prix, in which the four-time world champion hinted at a possible departure from Formula 1. Brundle believes that if Max has truly decided to leave, then he should do so.
“Max is very straightforward in his statements, don’t you agree? – says Martin Brundle on the F1 Show podcast. – He has always been like this and has been saying for quite some time that he doesn’t intend to stay in Formula 1 for long.
Max said he is getting bored, and I think boredom comes from constantly saying – either leave or stop talking about it all the time. A driver should get the most out of the equipment he has.
I will miss his talent, as his ability to drive at incredible speeds and control the car – only a few drivers in history have had such qualities, so his skills are extraordinary.
Max speaks quite bluntly, but accurately. In his place, for example, Schumacher would have dealt with the issue behind closed doors – he would have slammed his fist on the table, so to speak, grabbed the right people by the throat, and then would have come out to the public with a smile and said, ‘Everything is fine.’ And if the problem wasn’t resolved after that, then he would have gone to the press. But Max prefers to act differently.
There are no irreplaceable people in Formula 1. I have seen many amazing individuals who have left, and the sport continued to exist without them. This applies to any of us. As soon as we stop, people will immediately start discussing who can replace us. There are many Antonellis, Bermans, Lindblads, and so on in Formula 1, who will do the job well for 1% of the salary.
If Max decides to leave, then Formula 1 will continue to evolve, but right now his words are causing significant damage. But we all acknowledge that Max has always been like this.
I would be surprised if he really leaves. It’s great to race at the Nürburgring, but do I think he will leave Formula 1? No, I don’t think so, provided he finds a car that he likes.”
