Laurent Mekis: Tsunoda deserves another chance
Before the Japanese Grand Prix, we quoted Yuki Tsunoda, who is not racing this year but remains on standby for Red Bull and is fulfilling the duties of a test driver, including working extensively on the simulator.
"I am probably in the best physical shape of my life right now, even better than last year. Sometimes I find it strange to train so intensely when I know I am not racing. But anything can happen – the team says the same," said the 25-year-old Japanese driver at that time.
Laurent Mekies, head of Red Bull Racing, also speaks highly of Yuki's contribution to the overall effort in 2026: "Sometimes our sport can be cruel, and at certain moments, this becomes apparent. Yuki reached peak form just when the team planned to make radical changes, but his performance on the simulator this year, while working with our new car, has been simply outstanding.
We must not forget that Yuki is an excellent professional. His talent has not diminished, even if Tsunoda does not make it into the spotlight on Sundays. But he continues to work behind the scenes – it is thanks to his contribution that we are able to compete for high results. Few understand the issues of efficient energy use of the power unit as well as he does.
As driver market activity begins to ramp up with an eye on 2027, Yuki should find himself at the top of any team's list of potential candidates that need a guaranteed fast driver. He deserves another real chance in Formula 1."
Since it is not at all certain that a spot will open up at Red Bull Racing or Racing Bulls, Mekies' words were indeed directed at other teams in the championship, as it cannot be ruled out that a vacancy may arise somewhere, and the experience of a driver with 111 Grand Prix under his belt may once again be in demand.
