Madrid maintains that the F1 project is 'on track' despite facing criticism.
"Time has never been a significant worry for us."
Madrid’s new Formula 1 circuit is still on schedule for its September launch, despite recent reports indicating that construction is falling behind. Earlier this week, The Sun referenced social media posts showing a location that looks more like a sand pit than a racetrack, raising concerns about the progress at the IFEMA site. However, project leader Luis Garcia Abad has firmly countered these claims, asserting that work is proceeding as intended. "The first layer of asphalt has already been installed up to turn 19, and nearly everything has been concreted," he informed AS. "We’re on track. Time has never been a significant worry for us—the construction teams are progressing steadily and fulfilling their obligations to complete the project by May 30th." Garcia Abad mentioned that the subsequent phase, which includes the final asphalt, curbs, pit buildings, and grandstands, will commence in June. He also pointed out what he believes will make the Madrid race distinct on the schedule. "F1 hasn’t experienced Madrid yet, and as we bring it here, they can’t fathom what Madrid can provide for F1," he stated. The circuit will showcase several remarkable features, including a steeply banked corner known as "La Monumental," which the organizers hope will become a signature aspect of the championship. "It will be an icon of the championship," stated communications director Nira Juanco. "When an image is aired on television, you’ll instantly recognize it as Madrid." The contract for Spain’s long-term Grand Prix in Madrid extends through 2035.
