Colton Herta will not be able to compete in the Indy 500.
The Andretti Global team has abandoned plans to field a fourth car at the Indy 500. The decision was made after the Formula 2 organizers announced two rounds of this youth series in May, one of which, at the Canadian track in Montreal, coincides with the date of the classic race in Indianapolis.
Although the American team never formally confirmed the intention to enter four cars in the Indy 500, it was assumed that this would be done for Colton Herta, so he could compete in the Indy 500 again, as he has for the past seven years.
"As many suspected, we tried to do something to field a fourth car, and we were primarily counting on Colton. At the same time, we are working on his program in Formula 2," said Ron Ruzewski, the head of the Andretti Global team, in an interview with Racer. "Many other people showed interest, but it is important for us that there is some additional value for the team.
To be honest, there is no shortage of talented drivers, but we intend to focus all our attention on our main lineup. We don't want to be distracted by anything else, so we plan to stick with three cars."
Currently, 32 cars are confirmed to participate in the Indy 500, and Andretti Global will be represented in this race by experienced drivers Kyle Kirkwood, Will Power, who won this race in 2018, and Marcus Ericsson, the winner of the 2022 race.
