The new Xterra is on the way, and it seems Nissan has been listening to customer feedback on Reddit and various forums.
On Monday, Nissan confirmed in Japan that the new Xterra will come with a V6 option and a V6 hybrid when it launches in 2028. Previously, we reported that the SUV would feature a traditional hybrid V6 powertrain—meaning it's not a plug-in model—to comply with emissions regulations. However, Nissan has decided to also produce a conventional gas version for those who have reservations about electrified off-road vehicles. The company also stated that the V6 will continue to be available in the D-segment, indicating that it will remain in the Pathfinder lineup.
"We’ve observed the impact of switching from a V6 to a four-cylinder engine in several of our 42 platform vehicles, including the Pathfinder, Murano, QX60, and QX65. Customers have made it clear that they prefer the V6, as it offers a different driving experience compared to a four-cylinder," remarked Ponz Pandikuthira, Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer at Nissan North America.
Pandikuthira mentioned that with the right investment, a V6 can achieve emissions comparable to a turbo-four.
Interestingly, the Infiniti QX65, which just made its debut in New York earlier this month, is currently only available with a turbo-four engine. The three-row QX60 is available solely with a turbo-four at this time. Based on Pandikuthira’s statements, a V6 option may be offered in the future for both models, potentially even for the Murano.
What’s evident is that Nissan understands that, despite sales figures, customers may not be too pleased with the Toyota 4Runner's exclusive turbo-four option, just as many Ford Broncos also feature a turbo-four engine. Customers seeking a V6 may be inclined towards the upcoming Xterra.
