Bernd Maylander gives advice to Max Verstappen.
The Formula 1 safety car driver Bernd Maylander, who completed his 500th Grand Prix in this role in Australia, previously had successful stints in GT3 and won the "24 Hours of Nürburgring" in 2000 – the same race in which Max Verstappen will compete in May.
In an interview with RacingNews365, Maylander gave Max some advice…
Bernd Maylander: "What would I like to advise? In 2000, we had the perfect team and the perfect car, but at every briefing, the same thing was repeated: drivers must work for the team. Even if the car is good and the speed allows, think about the finish, don’t take too many risks. Over the last 30 years, we have seen many times that even the fastest cars do not succeed if the drivers take too many risks.
In 2000, we had one driver who took a lot of risks. We had to hold him back and say, 'Be careful. We are on pole, but it’s not necessary to be first after the first corner.'
The race is incredibly long. If you are not leading after the first lap, you might be leading on the 50th. That opportunity is always there if you can keep the car intact."
