The sport sedan is making a comeback in Infiniti dealerships next year, and now an important detail has been revealed: the vehicle’s name.
On Wednesday in Yokohama, Japan, Nissan Americas Chairman Christian Meunier announced that the upcoming Nissan Skyline will be named the Infiniti Q50 for the U.S. market when it launches in 2027.
On Monday, Nissan previewed the new Skyline with design elements reminiscent of the GT-R, including round LED taillights, Skyline branding on the rear fenders, and horizontal headlights flanked by vertical LED daytime running lights.
It’s not surprising that the sport sedan will carry the Q50 name in the U.S. The Skyline in Japan was previously sold under the Infiniti brand in the U.S., initially known as the G35, then G37, and finally the Q50. There have been various performance versions of the model, with badges ranging from IPL (Infiniti Performance Line) to S and Red Sport, though it remains uncertain whether any of these will return, with IPL appearing very unlikely.
Tiago Castro, Senior Vice President of U.S. Marketing and Sales for Nissan and Infiniti, previously informed The Drive in April that the sedan will feature “high-horsepower” and a manual transmission option.
That high horsepower is expected to come from the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine from the Nissan Z, delivering around 400 horsepower at a minimum. The manual transmission is likely to be the 6-speed from the Z as well.
The return of the Q50 will mark the only sedan reappearing in Infiniti showrooms, as the automaker is focusing heavily on SUVs, planning to introduce four models—including two body-on-frame variants—over the next five years, starting with the QX65, which is set to launch soon.
One thing is certain: The upcoming Infiniti sedan will be called Q50 in the U.S., but it will resemble the Skyline.
