Nissan’s new CEO appears to be quite resolute and is moving swiftly with the turnaround efforts. One thing is clear: Team Nissan is enthusiastic about the revival of the Xterra.

Late Tuesday night, coinciding with midday in Japan, Chairman of Nissan Americas Christian Meunier shared a teaser image of the upcoming Xterra SUV on LinkedIn, accompanied by the caption, “Badass is back.”

Enthusiasts are eager to trust Meunier. The teaser image adds further credibility to the notion that Nissan is genuinely committed to this revival of a beloved classic. The image Meunier posted depicts a shadowy SUV racing over desert dunes.

While the shadows are evident, a defined outline, nostalgic greenhouse, and overall form with straight sides and squared edges, reminiscent of the original Xterra, can be discerned. It’s difficult to ascertain whether there’s a stepped roof like that of the previous model.

A spare tire is visible hanging from the tailgate, and it seems to have a substantial amount of ground clearance.

On Monday, Nissan provided our initial look at the Xterra's front, showcasing a sculpted hood, boxy front, and a segmented light bar featuring amber LED daytime running lights. These lights resemble the triple mail slots from the original hardbody Pathfinder.

The next Xterra will come with a V6 and a V6 hybrid powertrain, with no turbo-four option in sight. It will be built on a new body-on-frame platform, which will also serve a new Frontier pickup truck, a three-row SUV, and two Infiniti models.

The Xterra is set to debut in the second half of 2028, with production slated to take place in Canton, Mississippi. For now, it seems we can expect a series of teaser releases over the next two years. Are we getting excited yet?
