Jenson Button: It's nice to win in your own car!
Jenson Button retired from professional motorsport last year, but he still enjoys racing historic cars, and he does it quite successfully. Last weekend at the traditional Goodwood Racing Club meeting, he took to the start several times in different vehicles, including winning the Phil Hill Cup race yesterday in his own Jaguar E-Type. Cars in the GT category and sports cars produced before 1967 were allowed to participate in this race, and initially, Jenson set the third fastest time in qualifying in this 1962 Jaguar. He took the lead right at the start and did the same again at the restart when the race resumed – red flags had to be displayed due to a rather serious accident. Then the 2009 world champion held off the pressure from competitors driving cars like the Ford GT40 and Ferrari 250 LM all the way to the finish line, crossing it 0.33 seconds ahead of them.
“It’s always nice to win, especially in your own car!” Button commented after the race. “My Jaguar E-Type held the first position, although I had to fend off the Ferrari 250LM and Ford GT, which were quite aggressively pressuring me in the closing stages of the race! This isn’t quite a usual category, as we don’t usually compete with such cars. They handle braking much more effectively, but I had a great time!”
