Montoya: Formula E is different from everything I'm used to.
Juan-Pablo Montoya – despite his experience in various categories starting from Formula 1 – had not been particularly interested in Formula E until recently, but changed his mind about the electric series after attending a race in Madrid with his son, who is currently competing in F2.
"When I watched the qualifying in Formula E, I found it very interesting," he shared in an interview with the official website of the electric racing world championship. "I think the format is really cool and well-suited for this series, as the lap length is shorter, and it doesn't take much time to complete it.
The impressions are very different from what I'm used to, but what's happening on the track is captivating, and that's great! I was amazed at how quickly these cars accelerate. It will be interesting to see the next generation of racing electric cars, the GEN4 cars. They say they will have insane acceleration dynamics.
All of this is nothing like what I'm used to – and I'm used to the roar of engines. Again, it's wonderful that there are so many spectators in the stands. I know some guys from the DS Penske team, and I remember some from Andretti Global from IndyCar. Pepe Marti, who competes in Formula E for the Cupra Kiro team, is friends with Sebastian, my son – they were teammates in the past and raced together."
Formula E is characterized by very close racing on the track, and it often leads to contacts between cars, while the races themselves are unpredictable. When Montoya was asked about this, he cheerfully said: "There's nothing unusual about that for me, as I acted on the track in such a manner myself. And in Formula E, I would have more problems than these professionals!"
However, Juan-Pablo does not promise to attend Formula E races next year: "I need to see the new generation car, but the problem is that my son is competing in Formula 2, and I'm working with F1 TV, so I travel a lot. And when I have free time, I usually prefer to play golf!"
This week in Le Castellet at the Paul Ricard Circuit, there will be an official presentation of the new generation Formula E cars, which will involve all teams of the electric series. The next two rounds of the championship will take place in Berlin on May 2 and 3.
