Zak Brown spoke about the role of Lambias in McLaren.
In 2028, Gianpiero Lambiasi, Max Verstappen's racing engineer, will join McLaren. McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown stated that Lambiasi will take on some of the responsibilities currently held by team principal Andrea Stella.
Zak Brown: "We are very excited that GP will be joining us. My job as CEO is to ensure stability and understanding of the future. We have many talented specialists who have the potential to grow.
As for the racing operations, Andrea actually has three roles. We sometimes say there are two, but in reality, there are three. He is the team principal, managing the racing team during weekends, and also plays a significant role, essentially fulfilling the functions of a technical director. Andrea is a kind of link that brings everything together.
You know that many teams now have a CEO and a team principal, and the role of the team principal is starting to evolve. These teams are so large that successfully combining these two positions is very difficult. Andrea is quite capable of juggling two roles, but expecting him to combine three is already a serious task. So I believe that GP's arrival will help us, and he will play an important role.
My job is to always look ahead and think about who can develop in our sport. Given GP's experience and age, I think he can stay at McLaren for a long time and continue to grow with the team."
Zak Brown does not believe that Lambiasi's departure is another sign of decline at Red Bull Racing, considering that in the last couple of years, the team has lost Christian Horner, Adrian Newey, Rob Marshall, and Jonathan Wheatley.
"I think it would be very foolish to write off Red Bull," continues Zak Brown. "I also believe that Audi has done a very good job. It would be naive to think that other teams will not progress quickly.
Over time, the competition will only get tighter. We see how quickly everything can change in Formula 1 – some teams quickly become competitive, but can just as quickly lose their advantage.
Red Bull probably needs to undergo some kind of reboot. They have lost many employees – Horner, Wheatley, GP, Newey, Dan Fallows. A large part of those working on the team bridge has changed. I highly value Laurent Mekies and believe he is doing an excellent job. He is technically savvy, young, and he has to rebuild the team and compensate for the losses. I have no doubt he will succeed.
Like McLaren, they have many talented specialists who just need to be unleashed. Not long ago, they were dominant, so there are many strong specialists in the team, and they just need to set a new direction."
When asked if Max Verstappen would move to McLaren following Lambiasi, Zak was brief: "If I had to bet, I would bet on Max moving to Mercedes."
