Piastri: In some aspects, there are indeed improvements.
On Wednesday, Oscar Piastri had the opportunity to drive the MP4/23, Lewis Hamilton's championship-winning car, during the McLaren Racing Live event in Miami, and at today's FIA press conference, he was asked to share his impressions.
Oscar Piastri: "It was awesome! Driving old cars is always fun. This one had a special engine sound, not as complex compared to modern cars. And the feeling behind the wheel is just glorious; driving a McLaren with a naturally aspirated V8 engine is simply wonderful!
Of course, it was a fun day for our team. I hope we can go faster on the track this weekend – that's the plan. We'll have to wait to see what we've achieved, but I think we've taken a step in the right direction.
Perhaps it's not enough to challenge Mercedes this weekend, but we've definitely made progress. Of course, we expect many other teams have also prepared technical updates, but let's hope ours are better.
The team has a really fighting spirit, and we are confident in our abilities. I think we are back on the right track."
Like all the other participants at the press conference at the Miami racetrack, the Australian driver was asked about the amendments made to the championship regulations ahead of the Miami round, especially since this issue became particularly pressing after Oliver Berman's serious crash in Suzuka.
"After Suzuka, various ideas were expressed," Oscar replied. "Of course, after Oliver's crash, it became clear that something needed to change. The FIA and Formula 1 listened to the drivers' opinions and made amendments, and that's good.
As I've said before, the opportunities to change things during the season are quite limited, but I think we tried to do what we could. The measures taken were reasonable and well thought out. Now we just need to see what comes of it. When I was working on the simulator, there were indeed improvements in some aspects, while in others, everything remained the same.
But from a safety perspective, I think these changes can be considered a step in the right direction."
