"The positive aspect is that we managed to bounce back."

Williams has made progress in Miami after a challenging start to 2026, primarily concentrating on reducing the car's weight. Driver Carlos Sainz noted that the vehicle is now more competitive than it was before the break in April. "The positive aspect is that we managed to bounce back," he stated. "We were quicker than the Haas cars, which wasn’t the case five weeks ago, so that’s encouraging."

However, as a director of the GPDA, Sainz also downplayed the effects of the new regulatory adjustments, which were partly aimed at addressing the growing concerns from drivers. "Very little has changed. We anticipated minimal changes," he commented. "We’ll need to wait until later in the season, or even next year, for the FIA and the teams to be willing to make more significant alterations."

Much of Williams' advancement can be attributed to a substantial weight reduction initiative. Team principal James Vowles disclosed the extent of the effort. "The engineering work carried out at the factory has eliminated all excess weight from the car, plus an additional 10 kilos," he explained. "That engineering work has been completed; however, it hasn’t been implemented in the car yet because, under the current cost cap, it’s not efficient to do so."

Instead, the enhancements will be rolled out gradually. "Regarding the weight, there’s a couple of kilos removed in Miami, and a similar decrease will occur at each race, basically," Vowles elucidated. "Caution is necessary when bringing a product to the track when it’s nearly out of production."

"But what gives me satisfaction is that it has been demonstrated that we can design the car to the appropriate specifications to achieve the desired weight." "That’s our goal, but the production process will take some time." He even made a jest about the weight reductions, playfully rubbing his stomach while mentioning the "couple of kilos" saved in Miami.
