Audi has not yet determined its position on the V8.
The new regulations for power units, which came into effect this year, were one of the reasons for Audi's entry into Formula 1. However, the FIA president has already firmly stated the desire to switch the championship to atmospheric V8 engines with minimal hybrid components. Audi is currently cautiously commenting on this idea.
Mattia Binotto, Audi's project leader in Formula 1: "I must say that our drivers are satisfied with the current format. Yes, a lot has changed this year, so everyone needs to adapt to these changes, but overall, if we analyze the interest in racing, we see an excellent spectacle.
Many overtakes, tight battles. I believe we have a great format, where Formula 1 remains a platform for cutting-edge technology innovations.
I think it's too early to talk about the future. Of course, we have started discussing this with the FIA. We will all sit down together and discuss what is best for Formula 1. But I will not speak negatively about the current format; I consider it good. Just recently, we made some changes to the regulations to optimize it. Perhaps in the future, in the coming seasons, we will change something else, but I think we should not forget about what we see. There have been entire eras in history when Formula 1 was more boring. What we see now does not deserve the negativity that sometimes arises.
Audi has always strived to create high-performance engines, and I think this is important for us, and we are certainly discussing with the FIA what compromise will be best for the future."
