Lando Norris: We had a chance to win.

Lando Norris: We had a chance to win.

In Miami, Lando achieved nearly the maximum result, winning the sprint and finishing second in the race…

Question: Lando, what emotions did your 45th podium leave you with? Lando Norris: You know, I’m very happy that we are fighting for wins and poles again. We had a strong weekend, I did well – there were many positive moments. It’s nice to see that this weekend we made a big step forward – I’m proud of our team.

On the other hand, you always ask yourself if you really achieved the maximum? And I’m not sure about that. I feel like we had a chance to win, we could have prevented Kimi from getting ahead. I’m not saying we would have won the race – Kimi was very fast, especially at the end of the stints. He probably would have overtaken me anyway, but we had a chance to fight that we didn’t take. That’s what I’m a bit disappointed about.

Question: You say Kimi was fast. Were you faster? Lando Norris: I don’t think so. His pace at the end of the stint on Medium was much higher than mine. We both pushed to the maximum, but he could run a bit closer to me when he was behind than I could get to him when I was behind him. That’s one of the reasons why it was always a bit harder for us.

We’re not good enough in medium-speed corners; here it’s the 4th, 5th, and 6th corners that lead to a long straight where you can attack. And we lacked top speed – it was difficult to initiate an attack or force him into a mistake. We still lack a bit, but it could just be a tenth, and a tenth isn’t that much. We need to keep working if we really want to win.

Question: At one point, the race engineer said you had a problem with the rear wing? How did that affect your speed? Lando Norris: I don’t know. I need to clarify what they said. I had issues with the rear all day, but I don’t know what it was. After that, it got a bit worse, but I need to ask the team.

Question: In Canada, you will get more updates. Are you leaving Miami with a sense of confidence for the future? Lando Norris: Of course. After the progress we made this weekend, I would look strange if I didn’t feel confident about tomorrow. But we know this track suits us and hasn’t always suited Mercedes. Nevertheless, they were very fast.

Ahead is the Canadian Grand Prix, where Mercedes cars have always been quick; let’s see how it goes there.

In Formula 1, you shouldn’t judge the situation based on the results of one race; things change quickly here. You need to evaluate results over several races, on different tracks – permanent and street circuits, hot and cold, narrow and twisty. There’s no point in looking too far ahead. We had a good weekend, I’m proud of the team, but I want to be sure they continue to work and strive to improve the situation, as we still need that.

Question: What do you think about the regulatory changes made before this event? Did they improve the situation? Lando Norris: I think the FIA and Formula 1 did well. It’s a small step in the right direction, although we’re not at the level we need to be yet. On Saturday during qualifying, we said that if you attack everywhere like in previous years, you won’t achieve the maximum. Honestly, I don’t know how to solve this problem. We just need to get rid of the battery. I hope that will happen in a few years.
