Mekies remains a 'strong advocate' during Hadjar's challenges with Red Bull.
"Throughout the weekend, I was operating at the limit."
Isack Hadjar is currently facing scrutiny after a challenging weekend in Miami, with French media questioning if the notorious "second seat curse" alongside Max Verstappen is affecting him once again. L’Equipe correspondent Frederic Ferret expressed concerns as the young French driver struggled to keep up with Verstappen’s speed in the upgraded Red Bull, eventually crashing out of the race. However, he emphasized that Hadjar still has considerable internal support. "Laurent Mekies is a strong supporter of him," Ferret noted.
Hadjar's race began to fall apart when he had to start from the pit lane due to a technical violation by the team during qualifying. He made a commendable effort to recover, but it came to an abrupt end. Hadjar acknowledged that the mistake followed a weekend spent on the edge of performance. "All weekend I was on the limit and felt comfortable with that limit. But this time, it didn’t pan out," Hadjar shared with Canal Plus. "I wasn’t precise enough; I took too many risks in a 57-lap race. I wasn’t very smart."
His frustration was evident. "I’m angry because the pace was solid. I was catching up so easily," he remarked. "I’m throwing away points foolishly. I’m really frustrated, and on top of that, I damaged the car, which is significant too." At 21 years old, Hadjar has scored 4 points, compared to Verstappen's 26.
