Red Bull needs to continue making advancements to retain Verstappen, according to the team’s boss.
Laurent Mekies acknowledges that Red Bull is facing increasing pressure to sustain its recovery, especially to retain Max Verstappen. After a challenging start to the 2026 season, the team made significant progress in Miami, reducing its gap to the leaders by half. However, Mekies emphasizes that this is merely the beginning.
"We understand the dynamics. Red Bull and Max have encountered similar situations in the past," he shared with De Telegraaf. "We need to demonstrate that we can advance—not just in the upcoming races, but also in future seasons."
Despite the advancements, Red Bull still trails behind Mercedes and McLaren, requiring further improvements through upgrades and weight reductions. "We aim to keep enhancing our performance over the next few months," Mekies stated. "We're constrained by a budget cap, which limits our ability to develop endlessly."
He noted that relationships within the team usually remain stable after the summer break, with many teams shifting their focus towards the next season. Nevertheless, he affirmed that there is confidence within the team, including from four-time world champion Verstappen.
"The most pleasant surprise I’ve observed since I began my role is how well Max has integrated," Mekies remarked. "Additionally, the team remains united during tough times." He mentioned that the chassis department is now collaborating effectively with the engine team, and he can see the enthusiasm in everyone's eyes.
Verstappen himself recognized the improvements made in Miami. "The car is more manageable and less taxing to drive. It's definitely better," he stated. However, he cautioned that a gap still exists. "We’re making progress, but we’re not yet at Mercedes' level, for instance."
He reiterated his concerns regarding the current rules, even with the energy management adjustments introduced in Miami. "In qualifying, you still can’t push fully in certain corners, as it would slow you down on the straight."
Other teams have noticed Red Bull's advancements, particularly regarding its new aerodynamic approach. McLaren's Andrea Stella admitted that their concept is drawing attention throughout the grid. "It’s a very intriguing time," he commented. "The sidepod design that Red Bull has rolled out is quite distinct from the designs employed by Mercedes and Ferrari."
"Every team will certainly examine Red Bull’s concept and analyze its advantages. They have been quite clever and innovative in their interpretation of specific regulations."
