Sickness sidelines Newey during the Aston-Honda crisis.

Adrian Newey has reportedly been hospitalized due to illness during Aston Martin’s challenging start to the 2026 season and has recently been working from home. Jonathan McEvoy from the Daily Mail disclosed the suspected reason for Newey’s absence from recent grands prix, including Miami, where Aston Martin managed to get both cars to finish for the first time this season.

The report indicates that Newey’s health issues became severe enough to necessitate hospital treatment. The Daily Mail also mentioned that the design icon has been working remotely in recent weeks as he recovers. Aston Martin opted not to provide detailed comments.

"We do not discuss personal matters concerning any member of our team," stated the Silverstone-based team. "Adrian is working and was present at the campus last week."

The timing is unfortunate for Aston Martin, as they are facing a disastrous first season under the new regulations amid significant vibration and drivability issues connected to Honda. Spanish newspaper AS reported that the crisis has threatened relationships with Honda early in the season, particularly following tensions after the Melbourne race.

However, the report noted that the successful reduction of vibrations achieved in Miami was seen as a significant collaborative effort between engineers from Aston Martin and Honda. "They start from the engine but are reproduced in the chassis," Honda track boss Shintaro Orihara explained when discussing the vibrations.

According to AS, Aston Martin and Honda had to redesign steering components to minimize the extreme stress being transferred to the drivers' hands. This issue has been one of the key aspects of Aston Martin’s unfortunate start to 2026, with Fernando Alonso frequently voicing complaints about painful vibrations through the steering wheel.

Although Miami showed improved reliability, the performance continues to be lacking. AS added that Honda engineers are now concentrating on a significant engine upgrade later this season, potentially related to the FIA’s upcoming ADUO concessions system. "We already have some ideas," Orihara stated.
