Many automotive enthusiasts appreciate Ford’s Panther platform. The Crown Victorias, Town Cars, and Grand Marquis that once functioned as taxis and police cars are now being sought after by fans for engine swaps and track use. However, this particular Lincoln has taken an entirely different direction, transforming into a Hongqi CA7460 replica, and its backstory is quite fascinating.
I discovered this vehicle when Panther Magazine showcased it for sale on Instagram. Intrigued, I contacted the seller, who goes by Yang (@cy0208 on IG). He informed me that, despite being a registered 2001 Town Car underneath, it features numerous parts from the Chinese domestic market, from the grille and lights to the distinct badging that definitely won’t be found at your local junkyard.
According to Yang, a design and engineering team from China's state-owned FAW group visited the United States around 1997. This visit and several subsequent discussions led to Ford sending nearly finished Town Cars to China for Hongqi to install its unique components. A long-wheelbase model was even designed to be used as a diplomat's car and was intended for the 1999 National Day Military Parade in Beijing, but those plans fell through due to escalating political tensions after the U.S. bombing of China’s embassy in Belgrade.
Nevertheless, Hongqi produced an entire series of CA7460 limousines, and production of the car continued until 2005.
Yang purchased a 2001 Lincoln Town Car in the U.S. and then equipped it with Hongqi parts he imported from China. This vehicle has gained some attention online, and during my research, I noted that Jason Torchinsky from The Autopian had already seen it in person (that guy is impressive!).
What’s new now is that the Hongqi replica is up for sale at a price of $10,000. You might hesitate at that amount, but keep in mind it has only around 75,000 miles on the clock. The interior is in significantly better condition than one might expect, and there’s a good chance it’s a unique find.
Like all CA7460s and similar Town Cars, it’s powered by a 4.6-liter modular V8 engine. Being rear-wheel drive allows for some impressive burnouts and skids if that’s your style, although I secretly hope someone will treat it with care. Yang invested considerable effort into putting this car together, and he has maintained it in respectful condition.
Unfortunately, I won’t be the one purchasing this vehicle. Blame it on my other projects, such as the 1966 Ford dump truck sitting in my driveway with two flat tires. However, maybe you’d be interested in bringing home this piece of automotive novelty?
