Formula E: Dan Ticktum took pole in Monaco
Dan Ticktum, the British driver for the American team Cupra Kiro, which competes in Formula E with the support of the motorsport division of the Spanish company Seat, today starts from pole position on the city circuit in Monaco.
An old rule states that whoever wins the qualifying in Monaco can consider themselves halfway to victory, but this is only true for Formula 1. In the world championship for electric car racing, the cars are much more compact, lighter, and more maneuverable, and they were originally designed for city circuits, so overtaking is quite possible even on the narrow streets of the Mediterranean principality.
Nevertheless, Ticktum's achievement – this is his second pole in Formula E – should not be underestimated. Dan generally enjoys city circuits; after all, he won the Macau Grand Prix twice in 2017 and 2018. He also reached the top of the podium in Monaco when he competed in Formula 2.
Today, in a crucial battle for pole in the final qualifying, he outpaced Nyck de Vries, the Mahindra driver, by more than a tenth – despite the fact that during his decisive attempt he clipped the barrier.
In the semifinals, Ticktum beat Max Günther, the DS Penske driver, and during their attempts, both scraped the barriers, which indicates that the drivers were indeed pushing to the limit.
Starting from the second row today are Günther and Mitch Evans, who is in his last season with the factory team Jaguar, and in 2027 will be racing for Opel. But Mitch is one of the best drivers in the electric series, and he has won races and reached the podium multiple times, even when starting from the back rows, so he will surely try to gain a few positions today, including through strategy. Especially since the Saturday race will feature a mandatory pit stop, during which an express battery recharge will take place.
Porsche drivers Pascal Wehrlein, leading in the individual standings, and Nico Müller, the winner of the previous race, showed the 5th and 6th fastest times in qualifying, and they also clearly do not intend to be satisfied with these results – overall, the results of Saturday's qualifying in Monaco promise an interesting battle.
