Problems arose with the Mercedes of Verstappen's team.
When there were 3 hours and 22 minutes left until the finish of the marathon on the "Northern Loop" of the Nürburgring, Max Verstappen's team car, which had confidently led the race up to that point, suddenly turned into the pits.
It was Daniel Hunkadella's stint, who had only managed to complete three laps, taking over from Max at the next pit stop, and it immediately became clear that some sort of emergency situation had arisen.
The mechanics hurriedly rolled the Mercedes-AMG GT3 in Red Bull colors into the pits and began examining the condition of the rear right suspension unit. However, since there is currently no information about the reasons for what happened, there are speculations that the problem may be related to the transmission.
We have to wait for official explanations, but for now, it must be noted that in the absolute classification, crew No. 3 has lost the lead, which has been inherited by another Mercedes car with the number 80.
Hunkadella remains at the wheel – this likely means that the team is still trying to fix the malfunction, but at the time of publishing this news, Verstappen's crew has already dropped to 8th position.
By a strange twist of fate, just a minute before this misfortune, Max, speaking with journalists in the pit lane, said: "So far, everything is going well. When it started to get light, I tried to avoid trouble while maintaining a normal pace.
What I enjoy the most is the intensity of the competition; I like the very style of endurance racing, where you switch drivers, and this track is exceptionally challenging. But the car is working well; so far, I couldn't ask for more – however, there are still a few hours left until the finish, and we just need to stay focused, and we'll see what happens.
Of course, I will try to start the "24 Hours of Nürburgring" next year as well, but that always depends on my schedule. For now, let's enjoy this race."
In general, it seems like I jinxed it...
