Forget everything you know about Mercedes designs from the past few decades; the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe has arrived, and it’s striking. I anticipate some of you will have mixed feelings, and that’s understandable. Initially, I also found the photos peculiar. However, after seeing it in person, I had to concede: it’s incredibly impressive. It resembles a concept car that you can actually purchase, and in a sense, it is.
This new GT 4-Door Coupe is a high-performance electric vehicle, drawing inspiration from a prototype that set an astonishing record last year. You may remember that in August, an AMG GT XX completed 24,901 miles continuously in seven days and 13 hours at 186 mph. The new model is the evolution of that record-breaking vehicle. While some of the extreme elements, like the absence of a rear window, the expansive grille, and the solid carbon dashboard, didn’t carry over, this is still the most audacious car Mercedes or AMG has produced in a long time. Even if it’s not to everyone’s taste, I believe that it takes bravery to innovate so significantly in today’s market, which is precisely what they’ve accomplished.

The specifications for the production version are equally impressive. An 800-volt battery derived from Formula 1 technology, featuring directly cooled cylindrical cells, allows the GT to excel over both short and long distances. As Mercedes puts it, it can achieve sprint-like performance across marathon-like ranges. One engineer I spoke with in Germany explained that while EVs are known for rapid acceleration ("sprints"), this vehicle needs to sustain performance at autobahn speeds for extended periods, pause for a quick coffee break to recharge, and then return to the autobahn without sacrificing speed, range, or causing overheating.
In terms of power, it has an abundance of it. Three electric motors—two on the rear axle and one in the front—deliver a total output of 1,153 horsepower. For context, the GT produces that much power while weighing 5,420 pounds. Earlier this year, I drove the Porsche Cayenne Electric, which was astonishingly fast (it literally hurt my neck), and it generates about 20 less horsepower while being around 400 pounds heavier! The Benz is poised to be incredibly fierce.

The exterior design is indeed divisive, particularly in that striking highlighter yellow. While in Hamburg earlier this month, I had the opportunity to examine two different models, both shown here. They featured varied exterior and interior configurations. For instance, the yellow model boasts a light-up grille that resembles a light-up fascia, as it includes a light bar connecting the headlights, along with a smaller rear diffuser. The white model has a conventional grille and fascia but stands out with an enormous diffuser that can extend to enhance aerodynamics at speed.
Inside, the cabin is quite screen-dominant, as is typical these days, but thankfully, it doesn’t include the Superscreen that I criticized in my recent review of the new S-Class. The interior appears sleek, particularly the driver-focused cockpit, the stylish stitching on the door panels, the floating armrests, and the overall cabin ambiance that strongly resembles a concept vehicle.

The design of the air vents and some knobs in the center console might come off as a bit aggressive, but I think they look fine. Everything feels cohesive, and the entire interior functions well. Speaking of the interior, it's surprisingly spacious and comfortable; even the rear seat provides ample headroom for someone slightly over six feet tall.
Mercedes has taken considerable effort to create a sound that complements the GT’s aesthetics and performance. While it mimics a genuine AMG V8, it doesn’t feel contrived. It adds a pleasing touch to a robust-looking and performing car, and as mentioned, having an auditory experience (along with gear shifting) in an EV only enhances the driving pleasure.

Performance-wise, Mercedes claims that the GT can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.0 seconds and go from 0 to 124 mph in 6.4 seconds. It boasts a top speed of 184 mph when equipped with the AMG Performance Package. Details about range and pricing will be disclosed later this year, as the sale date approaches.
