Antonelli: It was very fun to fight with George.
Kimi Antonelli won the Canadian Grand Prix and became the first driver in Formula 1 history to achieve the first four victories consecutively, one after another. It must be acknowledged that the 19-year-old Italian was lucky again, as George Russell could have easily won, and he was indeed in the lead, but after 29 laps, a serious technical problem unexpectedly arose on his Mercedes.
Kimi Antonelli (1st): "It was a lot of fun battling with George. We were racing at the limit, but fairly; however, it was very challenging due to the strong wind. His sharp gusts made it very difficult to navigate Turn 10.
On one of the laps, he locked up the brakes, and I moved ahead, but then I locked up the brakes as well. Overall, the competition was very tight, and it's a shame that his car broke down because the interesting battle could have continued. But we accept this result; it's another victory, so I am very happy! And of course, I am very grateful to our team.
When I continued to lead on my own, I tried to conserve the tires, as the front left tire was starting to grain, and it was a very strange feeling when that wheel stopped providing normal grip.
But towards the end, we were again capable of a good pace, and I am already looking forward to the next race. My mindset is to keep doing what I am doing. Of course, we need to raise the bar even higher, as George was very fast all weekend, so I have to step up my game.
Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren will certainly be chasing us, so we must continue to attack. The next race will take place in Monaco, and it will be tough for us there, but we will try to prepare for any outcome. For my part, I will do everything possible!"
