Norris visited the racetrack in Indianapolis for the first time.
Immediately after the Canadian Grand Prix, which ended for Lando Norris with a retirement due to a transmission failure on his MCL40, the reigning world champion headed to Indianapolis and visited the famous racetrack for the first time on Monday, where the Indy 500 race took place the day before.
He was accompanied by American driver Conor Daly, with whom Lando has a friendly relationship, and they visited the racetrack museum, where the tour was personally conducted by Roger Penske. Then Norris played golf on the course that is part of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway complex and, along with Zak Brown, participated in filming that took place in the old motorhome The Condor, which the McLaren team used half a century ago.
Later, Lando spoke with the press, and at the end, Tony Kanaan, the head of the Arrow McLaren team, took him for a ride around the oval racetrack in a Chevrolet Corvette sports car.
"This is my first visit here, and the racetrack makes an incredible impression," Norris shared. "Of course, I miss the crowd in the stands. I think the fans are the most important part of the show. I remember watching Formula 1 races as a child that took place on the road course at this racetrack, and I really wanted to drive on it, so I often raced on it in the simulator.
Of course, the Indy 500 is the grandest race of the year. I couldn't watch it yesterday (it took place at the same time as the Canadian Grand Prix), but I'm very glad to be here. It's a pity I couldn't attend that race yesterday and feel the atmosphere created by 300,000 fans."
In addition, Norris met with Felix Rosenqvist, the winner of yesterday's race, and personally congratulated him: "The Indy 500 always remains one of the most interesting and spectacular races, as it's very important to choose the right strategy to be in the right place at the right time. That's how it was yesterday, but even more remarkable is that Felix, whom I've known for many years, won, although I haven't raced against him. Overall, I'm very happy for him, and I'm glad he won."
Naturally, Lando was asked if he had any desire to compete in the Indy 500 himself.
"I don't want to say no," replied the McLaren driver. "Of course, I would like to try something else besides Formula 1, as I'm a passionate fan of racing. I love F1 the most, although I also enjoy rally, motorcycle racing, and IndyCar...
I don't know, I've never thought about trying to win the 'Triple Crown' (which refers to the three most important achievements in motorsport – winning the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Indy 500). Of course, I've already checked one box, and you could say I came here to rekindle my interest and see this racetrack where Fernando Alonso tried to achieve success. All of this makes such ideas more appealing, so you never know what will happen in the future."
