Max Verstappen: I am very satisfied with the result.
In Montreal, Max Verstappen climbed onto the podium for the first time this season and is quite satisfied with the race results...
Question: Max, tell us about the battle with Lewis. It looked quite interesting from the outside...
Max Verstappen: Yes, it was great. I really enjoyed it. On this track, we have to manage our energy carefully, and when the gap is less than a second, you can afford to use a bit more energy, which increases speed on the straights and works well here.
In the last laps, I was trying to catch up; we were both pushing to the limit. I think this is my first proper race of the season. Plus, nothing broke, which is also nice.
Question: Tell us about the car's speed and your impressions of the weekend overall...
Max Verstappen: Honestly, I felt better in the car in Miami, and I'm a bit surprised to be on the podium here. But we have to consider George's retirement and McLaren's strategy issues. I'm very happy with the result. On Soft tires, we are more competitive, while on Mediums, we lacked grip, but overall we did well.
The first podium of the season is a very positive moment; we are pleased to achieve such a result in quite challenging conditions.
Question: What do you think about the power units of this generation?
Max Verstappen: This year, I've raced different cars, especially last week, which reminded me of how pure motorsport can be and how magnificent racing can be. The best drivers in the world compete in Formula 1; we can put on a great show even in rental cars. In that sense, the rules are not particularly important. But for me, when I'm driving the car, all of this is a bit confusing.
I believe we have reached a point where Formula 1 should not be. It's all too complicated. Fans don't even realize the challenges we face on the track, what is allowed when you're behind or ahead, what we should do on the formation lap or the out-lap, what the battery charge of these cars is. It's a shame we have to deal with all this.
I hope the organizers will change the situation next year. We need to at least make it more natural, to return to pure racing.
As I said, we are racers; we will always race, in any cars. People say, "Look, the show is great, the cars were fighting," but that has nothing to do with the cars. I think we just need to get back to racing.
