Ben Sulayem wants to remove the limit on presidential terms.
FIA President Mohammed ben Sulayem wants to amend the FIA statute to remove the limit on the number of presidential terms for one person and allow unlimited re-election until reaching the age of 70. Currently, the term of office for the FIA president is four years. According to the current statute, one person can hold this position for a maximum of three terms, totaling 12 years, but ben Sulayem wants to change this rule. According to GPBlog, on June 26 at the FIA General Assembly in Macau, he intends to propose the removal of the limits on the number of presidential terms. The proposal from the current FIA president is likely to be accepted, as he has enough support from the small national federations that are part of the FIA. Mohammed ben Sulayem was elected FIA president at the end of 2021, succeeding Jean Todt. He was re-elected in 2025 and is eligible to run for a third time in 2029. At the time of a potential third re-election, he will be 69 years old, after which ben Sulayem could potentially remain in office for another four years. According to the current FIA statute, a candidate for the presidency must not be older than 69 years at the time of the election to be eligible to serve a full term.
