Stella puts an end to new rumors regarding the Lambiase succession.

Andrea Stella has responded to renewed speculation that Max Verstappen's long-time race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, is being considered to replace him as McLaren team principal. The rumors began circulating again after Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies hinted in Canada that Lambiase’s future role at McLaren would be as team principal.

"From my understanding, GP is going to McLaren to take on the role of team principal," Mekies stated. "That’s what I indicated to you previously. We had several discussions before he made that decision." He added, "Don’t ask me if it’s going to happen; the timing is not something I’m involved with. I can only share the substance of our discussions."

Mekies' remarks have intensified the ongoing speculation regarding Stella potentially returning to Ferrari, where he was previously part of the team during the Michael Schumacher era. However, amidst the fresh wave of rumors, Stella emphasized that he views Lambiase’s addition as a means to enhance McLaren’s leadership structure, not as a replacement.

"I was with Ferrari in the early 2000s, and I understand the level of seniority, expertise, and leadership necessary to succeed now and in the future," said Stella. "Hiring GP aligns with this vision, aiming to create supplementary leadership that integrates with our current leadership and builds a stronger McLaren team."

"I was very eager for GP to join McLaren." Stella acknowledged that the responsibilities of managing the reigning world champions have escalated. "I’m personally quite stretched in my role as team principal, and I require a reliable team of leaders alongside me," noted Stella. "So, I believe the plan is clear. Any other speculation brings us back to the silly season."

At 55, Stella made one of his most definitive statements regarding his own future. "I am definitely fully committed to McLaren," he affirmed. "My mission is clear: we aim to secure a new area in the trophy cabinet for the years ahead at McLaren." As for Lambiase, Stella explained that his hiring is simply part of McLaren’s strategy to attract top talent in Formula 1.

"At McLaren, our goal is to hire the best people in Formula 1, the best expertise, and the best leaders," he stated. "The fact that GP chose to join McLaren underscores the credibility of our team." He concluded, "So, regarding the silly season? What matters to us is stability and ensuring that the best talents in Formula 1 seek to join McLaren."
