If you're considering a third-generation Toyota 4Runner, now might be the time to act. A remarkably well-kept, low-mileage N180 4Runner recently fetched $52,800 at Mecum's 2026 Indianapolis Auction, exceeding expectations and seemingly validating the auction house's belief that 1990s 4Runners may be entering a new era of desirability among collectors.

This 1996 SR5 model was noted by Mecum as one to keep an eye on prior to the auction. About two weeks before it was set to go under the hammer, the 4Runner was outpacing all other lots in terms of interest, even in a catalog filled with traditional collector vehicles such as vintage muscle cars and rare supercars. Mecum anticipated the 4Runner would sell for between $35,000 and $45,000, making the final price quite surprising.

This is likely the finest 1996 Toyota 4Runner you'll come across. With only 6,951 miles, and based on the auction listing photos, the vehicle is in pristine condition for a 30-year-old model. Its silver paint (officially named Desert Dune Metallic by Toyota) and 183-horsepower, 3.4-liter V6 engine give it an unpretentious look. Like many Toyota models of its era, it focused more on reliability than style, which may explain why the N180 has gone unnoticed—but could that be changing soon?

In the last decade, Mecum has auctioned eight other 1996 4Runner SR5 vehicles, with a previous maximum selling price of $28,075 in a 2024 auction. Bring a Trailer has seen 598 auctions for N180 4Runners from model years 1996 to 2002. Most sold for $20,000 or less, but in April of this year, a 2000 Limited model with roughly 20,000 miles sold for $46,555. This California vehicle was also in outstanding condition, much like the 1996 SR5 sold at Mecum.

A couple of trends could shift auction prices from anomalies to standard practice. Older SUVs have already gained collectible status, and as they become rarer and more expensive, it's logical that a new generation of vehicles will occupy the lower end of the market. While an N180 might not possess the allure of an FJ Land Cruiser, at around $50,000, it remains a more affordable option compared to the finest examples of that classic model.

As younger generations start to engage with collector cars, vehicles from the 1990s are expected to gain in popularity. We're seeing evidence of this with six-figure sales for models like the Acura Integra Type R, and Hagerty forecasts that even the Chevy Cobalt SS could become a sought-after collectible as those who recall these models from their youth enter the market. So, why shouldn't the N180 4Runner also be experiencing a surge in interest?
