The Formula 1 circus is making its way to its beloved destination: Monaco. However, as we all know, the principality is renowned more for its glamour and extravagant displays of wealth than for the on-track excitement. That said, there is a good chance this year's race could be more thrilling. Will the updated 2026 regulations enhance the excitement of the Monaco Grand Prix?
This season has featured several entertaining races so far, with last weekend’s Canadian GP standing out as the best. This excitement wasn't limited to Sunday alone; there was plenty of action during the Sprint and qualifying sessions as well. We witnessed a rivalry between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli from Mercedes, a podium finish for Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, and Cadillac's best performance yet in the Sprint.

It appears that teams and drivers are increasingly adjusting to the 2026 regulations and the slight adjustments made before Miami, leading to more overtaking and competitive racing. Ferrari seems to be improving, and contrary to initial perceptions in Japan, it has not fallen behind McLaren in terms of outright performance. Whether Ferrari can maintain this development pace and avoid mistakes with race-day strategies remains to be seen; however, things are looking positive so far. It was thrilling to witness Hamilton battling Verstappen for a podium spot.
Additionally, Ferrari has been identified as a genuine contender in Monaco, as its current setup is well-suited to the handling-focused street circuit, rather than the long straights and sweeping high-speed corners that expose the Ferraris' top-speed shortcomings.
This situation also benefits many drivers in the midfield and at the back of the grid, including the Racing Bulls, Haas, Audi, and even Cadillac. These teams will be eager to secure a solid qualifying setup to start further up the grid and steer clear of any chaos on Sunday. Predicting Red Bull's performance is challenging, given their inconsistent results this season; nevertheless, Verstappen will certainly push hard to optimize his underperforming vehicle.

Then there's Mercedes, which is definitely favored to win in Monaco. However, one thing we know about this circuit is that the situation is rarely straightforward. A single crash, a poorly timed yellow flag, or even a few raindrops can disrupt the field and lead to unexpected outcomes.
In summary, it will be fascinating to see how the new cars handle the Monaco circuit and how drivers will strive to maximize every ounce of energy and aerodynamic advantage during qualifying and the race. Who knows, perhaps the new regulations and a different spot on the calendar (Monaco used to be held on Memorial Day weekend) will be enough to breathe new life into the event.
