Sainz keeps options available as Williams duo scale back Vowles.
"If opportunities present themselves, then you should certainly think about them."
Carlos Sainz remains open to future possibilities, even though he has made it clear that his long-term preference is to stay with Williams. The Spanish driver responded to recent remarks from team principal James Vowles, who expressed a desire to keep both Sainz and Alex Albon beyond 2026 as Williams works on its rebuilding process. Sainz appreciated the public expression of support.
"I was pleased to hear from James that the team lineup will stay the same," he stated. "I believe we both concurred that this is the ideal scenario. For me, the perfect path is to drive for Williams, observe the team's progress, and continue to assist in strengthening it."
Despite Williams’ unsatisfactory start to 2026, the former Ferrari driver emphasized his commitment to the project. "When I decided to join Williams a couple of years back, I committed to achieving success, and I genuinely hope we can accomplish that," Sainz mentioned. "This year, we have faced an unexpected significant challenge, and now all my focus and efforts are aimed at helping the team navigate through this crisis as swiftly as possible."
However, the four-time grand prix winner acknowledged that any driver must contemplate championship-winning prospects if they arise. "I made it clear in 2025 that my ideal plan centered on making Williams champions again," Sainz remarked. "It’s my aspiration, and I am working toward it. I also understand that as a driver, winning is important to me, and I can win both races and World Championships if provided with a competitive car. And if opportunities come up, then you should definitely explore them."
When questioned about whether rival teams had already reached out regarding 2027, Sainz chuckled. "Always, of course, man," he joked. He added, "No, I’m not going to comment. There are still a few months ahead, so we can discuss it later."
On the other hand, Alex Albon expressed a stronger commitment to remaining with the team. The Thai-British driver has made 95 starts for Williams, matching the total of the legendary Nigel Mansell for the team. When asked if he was willing to stay long enough to compete for titles under Vowles' 2030 target, Albon's response was clear. "Yeah, I would," he replied. "I feel like I’ve been part of this team since its early days, even before James joined. I’ve put a lot of effort and dedication into it, and I would love to see it through."
