Monaco loophole ignites innovative wing designs in F1.
"Ferrari is expected to be very competitive."
Formula 1's leading teams have arrived in Monaco with some striking innovations for their rear wings, taking advantage of a unique opportunity created by the circuit’s specific rules. With the FIA's decision to disable the active aerodynamic 'straight-line mode' for this race, teams find they have extra space in the center of their rear wings, which is usually occupied by the actuator mechanism.
Mercedes, Red Bull, and McLaren have all capitalized on this situation. The outcome is a range of unconventional winglet designs positioned high above the rear wing, in the area typically used for the straight-line mode hardware. Mercedes appears to have adopted the most ambitious strategy. The team has utilized the vacant actuator mounts to install innovative aerodynamic surfaces aimed at producing extra downforce with minimal drag increase. Red Bull has also taken advantage of this opening, albeit with a more straightforward solution resembling a smaller 'monkey seat' setup.
However, the Monaco favorites, Ferrari, do not seem to have implemented a similar design. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli has confirmed that Mercedes has arrived with new components, stating, "Ferrari will be very strong," predicting that they are the frontrunners here. "We’ve brought new front and rear wings, so we’ll see how it plays out."
Given the distinct layout of Monaco, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri anticipates a more typical race weekend. "We should have full energy here," he explained. "There are, in a way, restrictions on how the energy is utilized. It isn’t full throttle all the time." Piastri thinks that Monaco’s circuit should naturally ease some of the 'Mario Kart' comparisons that have followed the new regulations in Formula 1. "Racing here should be relatively straightforward," he remarked. "It might be trickier with the cars due to the reduced downforce. But let’s hope for a much more conventional race weekend in terms of racing."
