Monaco loophole leads to innovative new wing designs in F1.
"Ferrari will be very competitive."
The leading teams in Formula 1 have arrived in Monaco with some striking innovations for their rear wings, having found a unique opportunity due to the circuit's specific regulations. With the FIA disabling the active aerodynamic 'straight-line mode' for Monaco, teams suddenly have available space in the center of their rear wings where the actuator mechanism typically functions. Mercedes, Red Bull, and McLaren have all taken advantage of this.
As a result, they've introduced a variety of unconventional winglet designs positioned high above the rear wing, in an area that would usually be filled by the straight-line mode hardware. Mercedes seems to have adopted the most bold approach, utilizing the vacant actuator mounts to implement innovative aerodynamic surfaces aimed at generating extra downforce with minimal additional drag. Red Bull has also capitalized on this situation, though with a more straightforward solution that resembles a small 'monkey seat' setup.
However, Ferrari, one of the favorites for Monaco, does not appear to have rolled out a similar design. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli confirmed that Mercedes has brought new components. "Ferrari will be very competitive," the Italian projected. "They are the favorites here, but we have introduced new front and rear wings, so we will see how it plays out."
Given Monaco’s distinctive layout, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri anticipates a more traditional race weekend. "We should have full energy here," he stated. "There are, in a sense, constraints on how the energy is released. It’s not full throttle everywhere."
Piastri believes that the design of Monaco’s circuit should help mitigate some of the 'Mario Kart' comparisons that have emerged following Formula 1's new regulations. "The racing here should be relatively straightforward," he remarked. "It might be more challenging with the cars due to having less downforce. But let’s hope we have a considerably more conventional race weekend in terms of the racing."
